There is a clear and present danger that comes hand in hand with the ACCC’s decision authorising the buying group Honeysuckle NIB Cigna for the next five years – Insurance become the guardians and final decision makers in the delivery of patient health care. Stealing away clinical & patient autonomy, increasing the risk of delivering low value care, reducing competition.
Hospitals and practitioners will be coerced into contracts that benefits not the patient nor does it benefit the provider – it benefits only the Insurance Companies. The fee they set is not independently determined and very rarely reviewed or indexed and once contracted undermines the ability of hospitals and doctors to act independently in the patient’s best interest.
There should be no 3rd wheel in the patient-doctor relationship. How a patient is managed and treated should be a decision between the Doctor and Patient – Insurance is not Healthcare.
